LGBT+ History Month - Politics in Art

This year, the theme for LGBT+ History Month is “Politics in Art”, a timely reminder that artists from the communities we represent continue to make culture-shifting contributions in art, politics and beyond.

Artists of all creative stripes play a vital role in UK Black Pride’s annual celebration, and each year, they take to our stages to shout, celebrate and entertain, driven by a collective understanding that our politics and our art are inextricably linked. It is at the messy intersection of the personal-political that some of our most enraged, impassioned and revolutionary art is created – and we are proud to offer our stages and platforms for such  unapologetic artistic expression.

LGBT+ History Month is an important time for us to reflect on and amplify the achievements of LGBTQI+ pioneers, to educate allies in the process and to increase the visibility of those within our communities. But LGBT+ History Month is also a reminder that history is made now. We call one and all to seek out artists from the communities we represent and engage them in sustaining and sustainable ways, and to make a concerted effort to support or create more spaces for the artistic and creative expression of LGBTQI+ Black people and people of colour.

We’d like to thank the artists in our communities who continue to speak truth to power, set us alight with recognition and show us back to ourselves. What you bring to the world is important, beautiful and necessary, and we reaffirm our commitment to building and holding spaces for you to show the world what you’re made of.

Toni Cade Bamara said, “The role of the artist is to make revolution irresistible” and we’d like to thank the artists within our communities for doing exactly that.
